Marillion - Kayleigh

Marillion, the British rock band are out on tour and visited Sweden for a gig at Debaser here in Stockholm on Sunday. Have actually been able to see them play live that few times and this was a very high class performance, a band made up of amazing musicians who even get a really good balance live.

The sound was excellent, the light was cruel and joy of playing was at its peak with lots of humor, a great evening in other words, the fans were totally blessed. Lots of nice tunes got played, see set list below.

Marillion formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1979. Their recorded studio output since 1982 is composed of sixteen albums generally regarded in two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original frontman Fish in late 1988, and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989. All four albums released with Fish were commercial successes, and the band released a string of top ten singles including their best-known worldwide hit, 1985's "Kayleigh".

While major hit singles proved elusive under Hogarth's new leadership, his first album with the band, Seasons End, was a hit, and albums continued to chart high until the dissipation of their mainstream popularity in the late 1990s. The band made a comeback from the mid- to late-2000s, achieving their first top ten singles with Hogarth, including the international 2004 hit, "You're Gone", and enjoying increased album sales.

Todays tune "Kayleigh" was the group's most successful single in terms of chart position. The single was kept from the UK Number 1 spot by charity single "You'll Never Walk Alone" by supergroup The Crowd in the summer of 1985.

Kayleigh the official video, with Fish on vocal.

A never version of the song, recorded over 3 nights at the Marillion Weekend 2009. And here you get three songs in a row. "Kayleigh - Lavender - Heart of Lothian"

Fish has said that his writing the song was 'his way of apologizing to some of the women he had dated in the past.'Although the lead singer and lyricist of the band, Fish, had at one point dated a woman whose forenames were Kay Lee, the song was more a composite of several different women with whom he had had relationships.

The guitar hook line through the verse came about, according to Steve Rothery, from him demonstrating to his then girlfriend what effects a chorus and a delay pedal could add to a guitar's sound. Rothery recorded the song on a chorused Stratocaster guitar, using the pick and his second and third fingers to play it. The album version features an extended guitar solo by Rothery, 27 seconds of which is edited for the single version.

Here are some pictures from the evening!
