Wayward Sons - Until The End

WAYWARD SONS is a UK rock act made up of Toby Jepson (Vocals/Guitar), Sam Wood (Guitar), Nic Wastell (Bass), Dave Kemp (Keys) and Phil Martini (Drums). They have an impressive resume of groups they have previously worked with – LITTLE ANGELS, GUN, SPEAR OF DESTINY, TREASON KINGS and CHROME MOLLY to name a few - which is reassuring in terms of the band as players, but doesn’t really hint at their sound. WAYWARD SONS sound nothing like the sum of their parts. The music is hard rock but mixed with a vitality and energy – both musically and lyrically.

The band is set to release four videos to support single releases. The videos together will make one short film. You can see the first video (for debut single “Until The End”) below.

Toby Jepson had the basis of songs written when the band formed. Together they then took these rough song ideas and forged their own sound. Lyrically the album sees Jepson treading a far more personal line than some of his previous output.

“I feel I have unfinished business, stories still left to tell, points to make, noise to create, all of the above... besides, it wasn't a choice, more of a need. My intention is very simple. I want to write about what makes me tick; about what I believe in. Hopefully you will believe in it too. It will be warts and all,” says Jepson.

The album was produced by WAYWARD SONS (Toby Jepson’s previous credits as a songwriter and producer include the likes of Katie Melua, THE VIRGIN MARYS, THE ANSWER and TOSELAND) and Chris D’Adda (Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds).

The Grand East - Movano Camerata

Monday, New week, time to introduce "Record of the Week".

This week we have an amazing blues rock album from the Netherlands.

A band that call them self THE GRAND EAST and their debut album "Movano Camerata".

"Movano Camerata" is a pretty varied album, but the basics is classic blues rock and influences that range from psychedelic mysticism from THE DOORS to Southern THE CULT rock, Hill Billy Country and New Orleans Soul to freaking madness of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. The music is raw with a big heart, the soulful intensity will totally blind you. The album opener "Kiss The Devil" is like a bowling ball, runs with straight focus and big goal true the newly oiled lane before your legs go like ninepins in a strike. "Rabbits & Children" is an beauty, nicely guitar playing with a soulful "Ian Astbury" vocals, at times it dropps it's foothold and flies like a swarm of bees. "Frogs" is a more definite song, with a clear direct vocal character. "Salt Water Love pt 1" is a classic blues stomper. "Troubled Mind" is another tune to the more classic old school blues, where the vocals hymns true the tune, a real beauty. "Water" sounds almost like THE DOORS, really cool tune where the bass lines gets it shine of light. "Dark Man" continues on the path of THE DOORS. "Dreaming" is more back to the blues, a jam with a distinct hammond sound, soulful vocals. "Golden Watch" could been picked from Twin Peaks, great horns that fills out the melody. "Wanna Have Some Fun", hammond, guitars and bluesy drums is the main in this more straight forward tune. The album closes with bluesy folkish "Walk Those Pretty Legs"

The band consists of:

Arthur Akkermans | Vocals
Joris van den Berg | Hammond
Niek Cival | Guitar
Teun Eijsink | Bass
Imanishi Kleinmeulman | Drums

Sum: This is an "Mandatory purchase" if you are into blues rock.

Today's tune "Kiss The Devil" is the first single of the debut album "Movano Camerata". Enjoy!

The Hellacopters - Soulseller

Sunday, time for a real classic.

THE HELLACOPTERS did a live performance at Debaser Strand here in stockholm, for the benefit for their former guitarist Robert ”Strängen” Dahlqvist's daughter Ingrid. "Strängen" who passed away accidentally earlier this year. It was a sensitive and totally mind blowing performance with the band, who really maxed out every little piece of strength in their bodies to make a performance that never should be forgotten.

THE HELLACOPTERS lineup during this evening was Nicke Andersson (guitar), Robert Eriksson (drums), Anders Lindström (Boba Fett) (keyboards), Dregen (guitar) and Sami Yaffa from HANOI ROCKS (bass).

The band and Ingrid in the middle.

Today's tune "Soulseller" is taken from the second album "Payin' the Dues", released October 1, 1997.

This was their last studio album to feature original guitarist Dregen before his departure from the band to focus full-time on his other band BACKYARD BABIES. The album was released simultaneously on both CD and on vinyl; however, "City Slang" was only available on the vinyl edition. The initial pressings were in 2000 units of clear smoke and 2500 units in purple vinyl. Two additional pressings were later available in two different versions of black vinyl. The Toy's Factory release also featured the bonus track "Oh Yeah Alright".

Here is a clip from the show at Debaser, Stockholm 2017.06.22

CORRODED is a Swedish heavy metal band from Ånge, Sweden. The band became best known for their song "Time And Again" which was the theme song for the Swedish 2009 Survivor television series on TV4. Papa Roach - Periscope (feat. Skylar Grey)

The Vacaville, California rock band PAPA ROACH have a released a new video for the song "Periscope", (see below) the tune which features a guest appearance by Skylar Grey, is taken from the band's ninth studio album, "Crooked Teeth", which was released on May 19 via Eleven Seven Music. The album has received generally positive reviews from critics.

Regarding to blabbermouth did PAPA ROACH vocalist Jacoby Shaddix said:

"'Periscope' is inspired by the realization that sometimes within a relationship you might not be worth being loved or that the other person may not be worth your love, and the struggle within that — how much effort it takes to make things work. One part that I think is really meaningful in the video is when Skylar and I are in the shot at the same time, yet we're not engaging with each other. It represents the 'disconnection' with two people, which is very much what the lyrics describe." Grey added: "You are loving someone from a distance, not able to reach them."

Regarding how the Grey collaboration came about, Shaddix told the Q103 radio station: "We wanted to have a guest female vocal on "Periscope", and on the last album, we had Maria Brink from IN THIS MOMENT on "Gravity". I didn't wanna just go in and grab another rock chick. I wanted to work with somebody that was outside the box and different but that I was a fan of. So I've been listening to this girl Skylar Grey for a few years now. And she's been on some great tracks — she's been on some Dre stuff, some Eminem stuff, she's been on a FORT MINOR track. But she's kind of this indie, alternative, pop type of girl, and she's just got a lot of credibility in that scene, and she's got a great voice, and I'm a big fan."

The album was written and recorded in a cramped North Hollywood studio, "Crooked Teeth" was produced by first timers Nicholas "RAS" Furlong and Colin Brittain, with the exception of "Born For Greatness", which saw the band collaborate with writer/producer Jason Evigan (Jason Derulo, Demi Lovato, Zedd, MAROON 5) for this positive, pulsating anthem. Furlong and Brittain, who grew up listening to PAPA ROACH, inspired the band to revisit some of the traits that personally endeared the band to them, most notably singer Jacoby Shaddix's remarkable rapping technique and the band's intense live energy.

Enjoy todays tune!

Egonaut - The Pledge

Swedish doomsters EGONAUT release new music video and unveil album details "The Pledge" is taken from the upcoming album "The Omega" out November 2017 worldwide on Mighty Music/Target Group.

"The Pledge" is a powerful and atmospheric tune. Catchy melodies and high-powered vocal.

Fredrik Jordanius, guitars, on "The Pledge":

I wanted to make a “simple”, straight to the point rock song for this album and this is what came out of it; a straight forward, catchy tune with a good chorus and a great guitar solo. The song also showcases the somewhat wider possibilities given by not having to combine guitarplaying and singing simultaneously. Lyrically it depicts turning yourself over to a greater power, unknowing of its motives and what it might cost you. As with most of the songs I wrote the majority of the riffs and then we put it together down in our studio. The video was once again filmed by Walka Photograpy, but the editing/post production was done at the Zebra Station and at Nackdrag Design.

Formed by Fredrik and Markus in 2005, EGONAUT have spent the last seven years refining their own brand of stoner-rock, merging it with seventies hard rock, metal and a 21st century attitude into their very own brand of music: Bastard Rock.

EGONAUT have also established themselves as one of Sweden’s most crushing live acts, leading to EGONAUT sharing the stage with among others HAMMERFALL, MUSTASCH, SONIC SYNDICATE, LILLASYSTER and HARDCORE SUPERSTAR.

Today's tune "The Pledge" is taken from the upcoming album "The Omega" out November 2017. The video shows the band rocking out as silhouettes, playing against a spacey background. Performed by Egonaut, Filmed by Walka Photography, Edited at the Zebra Station and Additional magic by Nackdrag Design

Place of Skulls - The Black is Never Far

Monday, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Busy times with a lot of work makes music listening suffer a bit, the pile of new records are growing again. So this week I pick an album that have a few years of playing time, an album that was in the pile of recommendations and now ended up as a "Record Of The Week"

"The Black is Never Far" is the third full-length album by PLACE OF SKULLS. The band is from Knoxville, Tennessee and was formed in 2000 by PENTAGRAM, ex-DEATH ROW, ex-CATHEDRAL, guitarist Victor Griffin. Griffin left PENTAGRAM in 1996 and during this time before starting the band, became a Christian. The name is a biblical reference to Golgotha. The band put out their debut album "Nailed", on Southern Lord Records in 2002. Many of these songs deal with Griffin's new found faith in Christianity. Four songs from the "Nailed" session were explicitly Christian and for this reason did not appear on the album. These were released as the "Love Through Blood" EP in 2005. Scott "Wino" Weinrich joined the band for their second album, "With Vision". This album was released by Southern Lord Records in 2003. Shortly after, Wino left the band to concentrate on THE HIDDEN HAND. In 2006 the band signed to Germany's Exile on Mainstream Records and released the album, "The Black Is Never Far". In 2010, the band released their fourth album, "As a Dog Returns".  2014 Griffin rejoined PENTAGRAM. June 17, 2016 the band released the album "In-Graved".

"The Black is Never Far" is a soulful rock album with music from a dark place, light doomish, light SABBATH riffing by guitar slinger and vocalist Victor Griffin. His vocals delivers husky, thick melodies that are filled with worldly destruction and as the album title indicates, the road to Hell is never more than a few missteps away. The album kicks of with real stoner chug "Prisoner's Creed", thick and heavy riffing. "Relentless" is another heavy rocker. "Sense of Divinity" is a heavy piece where SABBATH vein blows true the tune, great song work. "Darkest Hour" starts soft and beautifully before it erupts with SABBATH riffing, but keeps the calm , truly nice guitar work on this tune. "Interlude #1, #2, #3" are more like guitar picking intros. The half pace-acoustic tunes like the title track and the closer "Changed Heart" are very beautiful, melancholy with a sense of compassion. "Lookin' For a Reason" is a blusey one, with a guitar playing that is incredibly sensitive, moving, almost heartbreaking, brings a new meaning to the term of manly sorrow and sadness.

Sum: If you are up 2 some melancholy blues-doom, then "The Black is Never Far" is absolutely you're thing!

Today's tune "The Black Is Never Far" with Victor Griffin at Little Devil Tilburg 19-10-16

Budgie - Breadfan

Sunday, time for a classic.

"Breadfan" is a heavy metal song originally recorded by BUDGIE, appearing on their 1973 album "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend". The title refers to a person's relationship to money, "bread" being slang for money. The lyrics highlight the moral dilemmas on what to do with money; keep it, give it away, spend it and to ultimately be free of it and not to let it rule your life. This song was also featured in the video game Brütal Legend and its introduction used in a Brazilian sports TV news Globo Esporte.

BUDGIE are a Welsh hard rock band from Cardiff. They are described by author Garry Sharpe-Young as one of the earliest heavy metal bands and a seminal influence to many acts of that scene, with fast, heavy rock (an influence on the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) and acts such as METALLICA) being played as early as 1971. The band has been noted as "among the heaviest metal of its day".

Original line-up of BUDGIE, featuring Burke Shelley Bass and Lead vocals, Tony Bourge, Lead Guitar, and Ray Phillips Drums.

METALLICA released a cover of the song in September 1988 as a B-side to their "Harvester of Sorrow" single. It was later included on their 1998 album Garage Inc., and was also used as an encore during their 1988-1989 tour supporting their "...And Justice for All" album. A live video version is present on the "Live Shit: Binge & Purge" boxed set, taken from their Seattle concerts on August 29 and 30, 1989 where it was performed in the second encore. It was also played with frequency during the Madly In Anger with the World and World Magnetic Tours. A short clip of "Breadfan" is played at the beginning of the "Whiskey in the Jar" music video. METALLICAs drummer, Lars Ulrich, is a big fan of Budgie and visits them when he's in the UK. METALLICA also covered BUDGIEs 1971 song "Crash Course in Brain Surgery."

For those who don't know, the story behind the video goes something like this...

BUDGIE manager Graham Moloney had made repeated attempts to get BUDGIE on the Old Grey Whistle Test TV show, without luck. He said that the show's producer and director Mike Appleton and Colin Strong just didn't want to know.

So BUDGIE did the "Breadfan" video independently in a London studio. A late technical problem with the filming of a Sly Stone concert meant "Breadfan" got played on OGWT on 24 July 1973.

About 10 years ago. ex-Bandolier member Terry Cubberley bought a copy of the 18mm video tape of "Breadfan" on eBay. The tape had video but no sound. Terry sent the tape to ex-BUDGIE drummer Ray Phillips and Ray got someone he knew at BBC Wales to transfer the video from the deteriorating tape to digital media, and dub/sync the audio.

Apocalypse Orchestra - The Garden Of Earthly Delights

Lodged between medieval times and modern metal, APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA weaves a faceted tapestry of music. The tones of ancient drone instruments entwines with heavy guitars and music separated by over 800 years meet.

The band was formed by musical partners in crime Mikael Lindstrom and Erik Larsson, inspired by their love for folk music and slow metal they decided to combine the two. With a foundation of original music and lyrics but also incorporating melodies from as far back as the 11th century the goal was to create a musical homage to a bygone musical era. The songs tell of flagellants, plague doctors, tales of hell, the meaninglessness of war and of suffering; they are all chapters in the bands grimoire. To balance it out they also shine a light on medieval art, science and enlightenment.

After an initial period of writing music, the band needed to prepare for the stage. Jonas, Rikard and Andreas, all long time friends of Mikael and Erik, was asked to join, each bringing their own styles and inspirations, thus completing the band.

The quintet’s debut album, "The End Is Nigh", which focuses on tales of the plague, hell, and the meaninglessness of war and suffering, was recorded throughout the latter half of 2016. The drums were recorded at Studio Overlook by William Blackmon (GADGET, BEARDFISH, ISOLE) and the rest at Studio Bordun by the band. Per Nilsson of (SCAR SYMMETRY, ZIERLER, KAIPA) mixed the record at Studio Kabyss.

Since their inception in 2013, APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA have become a familiar entity on the Swedish club circuit as well as making the festival rounds. With a live show that features theatrical performances (sometimes utilizing actors and dancers), fire and projected animation, the band has become one of the most talked about acts currently playing out. The band feels the theatrical element can enhance the music, giving it the feel of classic storytelling.

A performance was given live with the Gävle Symphonic Orchestra and a chamber choir, smelting the philharmonic with metal and folk music during a night of cross over music in a sold out concert hall.

APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA always looks forward as well as inward, to seek answers to some of history’s biggest questions, as well as have a critical look at some common medieval myths. Lyrical themes ranges from everyday toils of the common man in the dark ages, onwards to art, science and literature, all the way to otherworldly views of existence.

Today's tune "The Garden of Earthly Delights", taken from the bands latest album "The End Is Nigh", enjoy! Video directed, filmed and edited by Magnus Ewald. Eric Clapton - After Midnight

Thursday, time for a cover. As we did J.J. Cale last Sunday, lets play Eric Clapton's version.

"After Midnight" is a rock song by J.J. Cale, first released in 1966. Eric Clapton later covered it for his eponymous album, released in 1970. Clapton's rendition became a success, prompting Cale to re-record the song for Cale's 1972 album Naturally. In 1988, Clapton later re-recorded the song for a Michelob beer commercial and then released the re-recording as a single. "After Midnight" is considered one of Clapton's signature songs throughout his career. Other artists cover the song in later years.

The tune can be found on "Eric Clapton" is the debut solo album from British rock musician Eric Clapton, released in August 1970 under Atco and Polydor Records.

After being successful with bands including THE YARDBIRDS, JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS, CREAM and BLIND FAITH, Clapton recorded an album under his own name in late 1969 and early 1970. The album cover shows Clapton sitting in a room which is going to be decorated and in which a ladder, a chair and some carpets are placed. Clapton holds a cigarette in his right hand and has his Fender Stratocaster Brownie electric guitar with him.

Avararium - Hurricanes and Halos

Monday, New Week, time to introduce "Record Of The Week"

Swedish metallers AVATARIUM, fronted by Jennie-Ann Smith, have launched their third full-length opus titled "Hurricanes and Halos".

Founded back in 2012’s by CANDLEMASS mainman and bassist Leif Edling and SOEN guitarist Marcus Jidell, AVATARIUM completed their line-up with keyboardist Carl Westholm, known for his work with CARPTREE, KRUX and JUPITER SOCIETY and drummer Lars Sköld of TIAMAT, beside already mentioned Jennie-Ann Smith, Edling still continues his influence as mentor and creative force, and has written six of the eight new tracks. However, this time Jennie-Ann and Marcus were also strongly involved in the songwriting process, and with the new bass master Mats Rydström.

"Hurricanes and Halos" is a bluesy, 70s influenced quasi-doom rock monster. The album fires off with the killing tune "Into the Fire – Into the Storm", where a powerful voice together with a great guitar work with masterful solos and a hammond organ that makes you weak in every single bone in your body. "The Starless Sleep" (today's tune) is an amazing tune, with superb vocals and a melody that have an convincing catchiness that easily could be a big radio hit in the future. "Road to Jerusalem" is a folksy half pace tune, amazing strumming guitar-work and beautiful vocals. The nine-minute epic "Medusa’s Child" is far out piece with kids sing-alongs, creepy weirdness, shifts between heavy and melodic and progressive old school. Next masterpiece is the "The Sky at the Bottom of the Sea" where the typical Edling trade mark make it's appearance along with psychedelic DEEP PURPLE organs, groovy and very powerful and the vocals make you vibrate of happiness. "When Breath Turns to Air" is a slow thing, a beautiful ballad. "A Kiss (From the End of the World)" is a another great tune with guitars that will flip you over and astonishing Jennie-Ann, it’s remarkably how she with that kind of ease adapts to the overall mood of the songs on the album. The record wraps up melancholy and elegant with the instrumental piece of the title track "Hurricanes and Halos".

Summary: "Hurricanes and Halos" is a very joyful and elegant album, classic, epic and powerful!

Today's tune "The Starless Sleep", second single/video release from "Hurricanes and Halos", enjoy!

JJ Cale - After Midnight

Sunday, time for a classic.

"After Midnight" is a rock song by J.J.Cale, first released in 1966.

Cale wrote "After Midnight" at a "much slower tempo" in contrast to Clapton's later fast-paced rendition. He recorded the song and then release it in 1966 as a single with its flipside track "Slow Motion". When Eric Clapton was working with Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett, Delaney Bramlett introduced Clapton to the music of J.J. Cale. "After Midnight" was the first of several Cale cover songs released by Clapton and appeared on his self-titled debut album. The performers on this version were Clapton on vocals and guitar, Bobby Whitlock on organ and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Delaney Bramlett on rhythm guitar, Carl Radle on bass, Leon Russell on piano, Jim Price on trumpet, and Bobby Keys on saxophone. It also appears on Just One Night, a live album recorded in Japan in 1979.

In 1988, Clapton re-recorded the song mainly for a Michelob beer commercial. The 1988 re-recording was released as a single with different B-side tracks: "I Can't Stand It" for the seven-inch vinyl, "Whatcha Gonna Do" for the twelve-inch vinyl and the CD, and live recording "Sunshine of Your Love" as the CD's one of three tracks. Another live version was released on Live from Madison Square Garden with Steve Winwood on organ.

Clapton said in his 2014 interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune:

The construction of "After Midnight" was great and it had everything. The thing that summed up J.J. for me is it had a little country, a little blues, it was rock and there was this guitar part that was baffling. That has always been the fascinating part; I still don’t think we got it right [on my version]. I’ve always been in awe of J.J.’s technique... He was a rhythm guitar player and a great lead guitar player, too. But when he played rhythm, it was very difficult to get it and know what he was doing.

When we recorded it, me and Delaney both did the guitar part it at same time, and it was a really difficult claw-hammer (picking) thing. I thought: "This is too hard," so we made a meal out of it. What got me is that it appeared to be a very complex track and I was just intrigued, and thought: "I've got to try and get this right." Cale was coming from this very soulful white music. It was at Delaney's insistence that I did "After Midnight", and that was probably one of the first songs we decided to record. And that began my association with J.J., really.

Cale was unaware of Clapton's recording of the song until it became a radio hit in 1970. He recalled to Mojo magazine that when he heard Clapton's version playing on his radio, "I was dirt poor, not making enough to eat and I wasn’t a young man. I was in my thirties, so I was very happy. It was nice to make some money."Cale's friend and producer Audie Ashworth then encouraged him to capitalize on the song's success by recording a full album, Naturally, released in 1972. Cale issued the re-recorded version as a single that same year with its B-side track, "Crying Eyes." The 1972 re-recorded version reached #42 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Cale told The San Diego Union-Tribune in his 1990 interview about Clapton's version:

I thought: 'Well, that won't go anywhere'. A year later, they started playing it on every radio station, including in my hometown. The first time I heard it on my car radio I just drove off to the side of the road. Because I'd never heard anything of my own on the radio before...

All record companies want big-selling records, and my music is a little too raw for commercial success. People are familiar with my songs, especially through Eric Clapton. But I have a hard time drawing a crowd, because I have been a songwriter. I've never sold a lot of records; my music's gotten much more famous than me.

Cale released a live version on the album Live in 2001.

John Weldon "J. J." Cale (December 5, 1938 – July 26, 2013) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Though he deliberately avoided the limelight (being temperamentally averse to celebrity) his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock". He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz.

Many songs written by Cale have been recorded by other artists, including "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton; "Call Me the Breeze" by LYNYRD SKYNYRD, John Mayer, Johnny Cash, and Bobby Bare; "Clyde" by Waylon Jennings and Dr. Hook; "I Got The Same Old Blues" by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, Freddie King, and Bryan Ferry; and "Magnolia" by Poco, Beck, Lucinda Williams, IRON AND WINE, José Feliciano, Ben Bridwell, and John Mayer with Eric Clapton.

In 2008 he, along with Clapton, received a Grammy Award for their album, The Road to Escondido.

Today's tune is recorded live in Dutch studio 1994.
